The Carpenters is one of the best-selling American pop singers in the 70s, reaching stellar proportions in hits such as Top of the World, Close to You, We’ve Only Just Begun, among others. I was exposed to their music through my father, who’s made The Carpenters part of his staple Sunday listening ensemble. One of the reasons I hate Mondays is the number of emails I accumulate over the weekend when authors usually submit manuscripts to me. My hands are full reading mail and sending out receipts the whole morning. So it is such a breather to receive emails such as these two:

Cheer Dance Update: We Won!

The Diwa Red Team Pep Squad did it again for 2 straight First Asia Ventures Capital Inc (FAVCI) Network Games. It was nerve-wracking at first. The other team had more men, so I assumed that they’d bring us down with unbelievable stunts and clarity and volume of voice. The pep squads of the four competing teams were housed in a row of rooms right in front of the covered courts and it was no soothing thought seeing them. But we stood out. From the costume, to the choreography, down to the execution, call me cocky, but we had it. I’m so proud of the team. I think what did it for us is that our concept was out-of-the-box. Right from the very start, I told the team I don’t want to go there looking like cheer leaders, which explains why I chose a military-inspired concept. We were creative and unconventional. I do know that the other teams did pay attention the last time we won. I can see traces of our old routine from their performance this year. I say to them, go learn. Good luck next time.

Divisoria Find: Chute Vest

I was costume shopping in Divisoria last week for the cheer dance competition when I stumbled on a red parachute vest which I just had to buy. I tried it on and I just fell in love with it. It’s perfect for jumping out on a plane, something which I did last Saturday. I’m still alive. And so in it.

When Madonna’s Ray of Light album came out in 1998, I was one of the firsts to troop to the record bars to buy a copy. I was a college student then. I could only afford to buy the tape which I listened to over and over again in my old Sony Walkman. Madonna’s seventh album is the most critically-acclaimed one she has ever recorded, and one of the most commercially successful. Here are two of my favorite songs from the CD. Yes, I now have the CD. I bought it 2 days ago. I’m still lovin it.

Madonna: Ray of Light

Be My Papaya!

I grew up in Bulacan, a province north of Metro Manila, where most of the families, especially in the places farthest from the city, are agricultural. It is right in the center of the agricultural plains of Luzon that’s why. So before industrial capitalists invaded its farmlands, the Bulakenyos lived by planting rice, fruits, and vegetables. The land is blessed with the richest soil, so fertile the soil that even now, amidst the sprouting of concrete buildings in what used to be farmlands, you’d find it easy to grow any kind of plant anywhere. In our old house in fact, you’d find an assortment of fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs right outside the kitchen. Most of these plants grew from seeds thrown outside the kitchen window. Because of this, we used to have around 5 to 10 papaya trees in the kitchen backyard. My father was fond of the fruit, so you’ll imagine where all the seeds go when we eat them—yes, outside the kitchen window. And yes, this is another nostalgic post. I’ve grown to love papaya myself, but not the ripe ones. I prefer eating green papayas, those that you cook in a stew or in some surprisingly great recipe like this one I’m sharing with you.

Ginataang Papaya
Ingredients:
1 medium-sized green papaya
2 cans of spicy sardines
1 pack of instant coconut milk
Onion
Garlic
Cooking oil

Procedure:
1. Cut the papaya into small slices the way you’d cut sayote.
2. Crush the sardines in its sauce.
3. Saute the garlic and onion in hot oil. Add the crushed sardines.
4. Add in the papaya and the coconut milk.
5. Leave until the papaya is cooked. Its consistency should be like that of laing.

Ginataang Papaya is best served freshly cooked with any kind of fried fish. Try it!

There’s a little story behind this recipe which my brother tells me he innovated himself. My youngest brother, because he is still hunting for a job after graduating last March, is the default housekeeper. Among other household duties, he takes care of budgeting the money I give him for our food. Now last week, he used some of the money for a personal expense which he thought was just okay with me. He was wrong there. So I told him he had to make do with what’s left of the money I gave him. That’s how this recipe was born.

• Papaya has papain which, aside from its now more widely-known ability to whiten skin, is an effective meat tenderizer.
• There are parts in the world which use papaya as a contraceptive. Papaya-flavored condoms anyone? Or papaya pills perhaps?
• Ground papaya seeds may be used as a substitute for black pepper because of its spicy taste.
• Eating too much papaya will make your palms and the soles of your feet yellow.

From classic folk rock to modern rock to top 40 and now pop rock. That’s the Indigo Girls’ 20 years of discography in one, uhm, phrase. The duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers has been making beautiful music together since 1985, and they just recorded their 10th studio album Despite the Differences under Hollywood Records which was released last 16 September 2006. Shaider’s Annie: This One's for the Boys

Minutes after featuring songs from well-loved 80s television children's flicks Bioman and Shaider in juOnBox Music 04, I just have to give in to requests for me to do a sort of tribute to some of the characters. Ok, the boys want Annie.

Annie, the trusty sidekick of Shaider in Uchuu Keiji Shaider (Space Sheriff Shaider), is played by Naomi Morinaga . Annie is best known for her preppy-looking do; yellow, white, and flesh ensemble; her big gun; and her ass-kickin (and panty-showing) stunts. Boys, I know. Annie is probably one of the first girls you fantasized about as a kid. Who wouldn’t? I also fantasized about her at one point. (Yeah. I fantasized that I was her.)

Unfortunately, Shaider was already the peak of her career. Probably in the hopes of resuscitating it, she tried another genre of entertainment. Porn. What a shift! Go girl!

juOnBox Music ends this week with guilty-pleasure fun especially for those of you children of the 80s, me included. Before the anime craze swept this country, there was Bioman and Shaider .
